One Dollar Horse
by Lauren St John
I’ll admit that as I started to read the sad start to this
amazing book, I wasn’t sure if it was for me, but I don’t like to put a book
down after I have started to read it, so I read on. I’m pleased I did. One Dollar Horse is the first of a new trilogy,
the second coming out in March, and I can’t wait for the next one!
The main character of the book is Casey Blue, a young girl
who has a dream of owning a horse with wings who will take her over the soaring
jumps at the famed Badminton Horse Trials. There are a few problems with this
dream. Firstly she is very poor, her father a convicted criminal for stealing
who has no job. Secondly, she has no horse, and could never afford to buy one.
Lastly, where do you keep a four star competition horse in the dreary outskirts
of Hackney, London anyway? Well, there is Hopeless Lane Riding School, a run
down, overcrowded, riding school where Casey volunteers to be around her
favourite animals, but no competition horses deserve to be there. But one day,
her father finds a one dollar note on the side of the road, and a starving
knacker’s yard horse on the other side…
In conclusion, I think that although the introduction to the
novel isn’t the best, the story is very well written and comes from the heart.
I really enjoyed this captivating, moving novel because it really showed that
it doesn’t matter what you have or don’t have, if you believe your dreams, the
might just come true.
